A respectful gesture during religious festivals is to send a gift or a card. Sending flowers works incredibly well for any religion.

There are various flowers associated with particular religions which have become a symbol of their beliefs and practices. For example, the flower of Christianity is generally seen as the Madonna lily whilst the symbol of Hinduism and Buddhism is a Lotus flower, yet different religious holidays and festivals make use of many different kinds of flowers.

In South Africa, the predominant religious holidays and festivals when floral gifts are exchanged include Christmas and Easter for Christianity, Pesach, Rosh Hashanah and Chanukah for Judaism, Deepavali for Hinduism and Eid-ul-Fitr and Eid-ul-Adha for Islam.

Christmas
Christmas is the most important festival of the Christian calendar as it celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ. Christmas is held on the 25th of December and is celebrated for 12 days through Christmastide until the 5th of January.

Flowers and plants related to the Christmas period are poinsettia, Christmas cactus, holly, ivy, the Christmas rose (which flowers during winter in Europe) and mistletoe. These flowers and plants bloom during the winter months in the Northern Hemisphere and are generally used for decoration. The flowers are also mentioned in Christmas hymns and carols. The tradition of "kissing under the mistletoe" is still very well known and involves the hanging of a sprig of mistletoe in one’s house. If two people stand underneath the hanging sprig at the same time, they are required to kiss.

The poinsettia is a red and green plant which is a popular gift at Christmas and used for decorations. Generally the colours associated with Christmas are red, green, silver and gold and many people choose to send a gift of flowers in these colours which are a perfect decoration to any home celebrating this festival.

Easter
Easter is celebrated on the first Sunday following the Paschal full moon, which is the first ecclesiastical full moon in the Northern Hemisphere, occurring over a weekend from a Friday until the Sunday. Easter is the celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ after he was crucified on the cross. The predominant flower associated with Easter is the Easter lily (Lilyum Longiflorum) as well as the daffodil, atamasco, Madonna lily and the Pasque flower.

Rosh Hashanah, Pesach and Chanukah
Rosh Hashanah, Pesach and Chanukah are three religious holidays featuring in the Jewish calendar. Rosh Hashanah is the celebration of the Jewish New Year and is celebrated in September. Chanukah is the "Festival of Lights" and is a commemoration of the re-dedication of the Jerusalem Holy Temple and is celebrated in December.

Pesach is the holy day celebrating the exodus of the Jewish people from Egypt in Biblical times. Pesach is celebrated in April.

All of the Jewish festivals use flowers as decorations. The religion is not specific about which flower should be used, but extremely fine and beautiful flower bouquets are the traditional arrangements given on Jewish holidays. Colours associated with the Jewish religion are blue, white, silver and feature in decor such as floral arrangements with candles.

Deepavali
Deepavali or Diwali is a Hindu festival which focuses on the inner light of all things in existence and is celebrated with fireworks, lights, sending flowers, sweets, sweet meats and festivities over five days, beginning mid October.

It is very common to find many jasmine and marigold flowers during the festival, as these flowers are extremely important to the Hindu religion as a symbol of prosperity. They are threaded into garlands with other flowers which are hung for decoration and are worn for the duration of the festival.

Eid-ul-Fitr
Eid-ul-Fitr, otherwise known as "Eid" is the end of the holy month of fasting (Ramadan) in Islam and is celebrated in September. Muslims celebrate the breaking of the fast by wearing their best attire, visiting friends and family and attending prayer services. Muslims also remember the deceased amongst them and visit cemeteries with large collections of unspecific flowers and gift hampers for children and parents.

This time is celebrated by giving to charity and often hampers are sent to charitable organisations.

Eid-ul-Adha
This festival is known as the Festival of Sacrifice and is the Islamic celebration of the strong faith and obedience of Ibrahim, who was willing to sacrifice his son Ishmael as God had commanded him to do. However, once God saw his faith and obedience, he provided a ram to be sacrificed instead and spared the child. The festival is celebrated in November. It is a popular tradition to send friends and family a gift of flowers during this festival. Special hampers can be used as Hajj gifts.

When I had a stutter, I used to be afraid of certain words beginning with certain letters. I have to say that words which started with a "b" were the hardest for me to say. I also had problems with d, v, g, and p words. I would attempt to swap these words with some form of alternative. I did avoid words on a daily basis but my lifetime goal was always to find a way to stop stuttering/stammering.

When seeing for a example an employment vacancy I would immediately think negatively about my chances of getting the position; my speech would bound to stop me is what I would say to myself.

As a young adult, aged around 16 or 17 I began to drink alcohol and boy did it make me feel good. From a person who had a real lack of confidence I now was able to be the type of person that I always wanted to be - somebody who had confidence. I now had no fear and was also able to talk superbly. Now I am not saying that you should all be in a permanent drunken state, however this showed me not only was I able to talk well but that the stammer must not only be a physical impediment but also physcological.

There are many forms of stutter treatments out there including traditional speech therapy, group speech courses, a one to one stuttering help course and even hypnotherapy. I personally believe that the way to go is one to one speech courses as every person who has a stutter is an individual and has an individual stutter.

Steve Hill now runs The How To Stop Stuttering Centre where he offers a one-to-one intensive speech therapy course as well as a self help DVD and a self help stuttering therapy e-book.

Whatever happened to that early church -- the one that Jesus founded and Paul helped promulgate throughout the known world of the first century? It changed. Slowly and surely, it changed.

Warnings of Departure from the Faith

Yes, they warned us. Both Peter and Paul said it would happen. And it did.

Paul in his first letter to Timothy: "Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons, speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their own conscience seared with a hot iron, forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from foods which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth." (1 Timothy 4:1-3 NKJV)

And in his second letter to Timothy, Paul repeats his dire warning: "Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage-with great patience and careful instruction. For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths." (2 Timothy 4:2-4)

Again Paul, in his farewell address to the elders of the church at Ephesus: "I know that when I am gone, savage wolves will come in among you and will not spare the flock. Even from your own number men will arise who will distort the truth in order to get disciples to break away and follow them." (Acts 20:29-30 REB)

The apostle Peter adds this warning: ". . . there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord who bought them-bringing swift destruction on themselves. Many will follow their shameful ways and will bring the way of truth into disrepute." (2 Peter 2:1-2)

Early Church Rumblings

During Paul's lifetime, we find divisions in the Corinthian church. Paul pleaded with them: "I appeal to you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another so that there may be no divisions among you and that you may be perfectly united in mind and thought. My brothers, some from Chloe's household have informed me that there are quarrels among you. What I mean is this: One of you says, 'I follow Paul'; another, 'I follow Apollos'; another, 'I follow Cephas'; still another, 'I follow Christ.'

"Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Were you baptized into the name of Paul?" (1 Corinthians 1:10-13)

In Revelation, the resurrected Jesus addressed another drifting church -- the church at Ephesus: "You have forsaken your first love. Remember the height from which you have fallen! Repent and do the things you did at first. If you do not repent, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place." (Revelation 2:4-5) In Revelation 1:20, we discover that the lampstand meant the church itself.

Church Organization Departures

Elders and Bishops

History records the slow but steady movement of the church from its scriptural foundation. The first departures were in organization. In the first century church, no distinction was made among elders in rank and authority. That was not to last. During the second century, we find congregations selecting one elder to preside over the meetings as a permanent president. Along with the new position came a change in title. The presiding elder is called "bishop." (The New Testament applies both words "elders" and "bishops" to the same men in the church.)

Bishops' authority and power increased over time, up to the point where each was assigned a territory called a "diocese." With that change, bishops controlled not only their own local churches, but a group of local churches within their geographic area. This was the beginning of the church hierarchy with "city bishops" in top positions, "country bishops" below them, and "elders" of local congregations below the bishops. So began the apostasy.

Temporary conventions were selected to settle disputes between congregations of the church. General Synods and permanent councils followed. These conventions eventually assumed legislative authority. "Metropolitans", diocesan bishops from the larger cities, presided over the councils.

The ecclesiastical men who governed the five largest districts were called "patriarchs", which means "chief fathers." In 606 A.D. the Roman Emperor designated Boniface III, the Patriarch of Rome, as the "Universal Bishop of the Church."

From a simple organizational plan of equal elders to a single elder presiding as bishop, to country and city bishops, to metropolitans, to patriarchs, to a single Universal Bishop presiding over all the church, we find the church evolving step by incremental step into the apostate church with an organization vastly different from the one Jesus established and Paul proclaimed.

Preachers

The local elder position of the first century church eventually developed into bishops, country bishops, city bishops, metropolitans, patriarchs, and popes in the centralized apostate church. So what happened to the preacher position of the first century church? Remember Peter, Paul, Timothy, and Titus? In another departure from the New Testament pattern, preachers became priests in the apostate church.

Towards the end of the second century, a distinction grew between those who preached and the other members of the church. Clergy became a higher order than laity. In various ways and in varying degrees this idea is widespread among many religious groups today. Those in the clergy often dress differently, many call themselves "priest", which is borrowed from Judaism, and wear titles such as father or reverend.

Of course, this distinction between "clergy" and "laity" is not authorized by the scriptures and it was not practiced in the first century church.

In stark contrast, Peter, and Paul showed great humility in carrying out their evangelistic missions. They never claimed to be different or exalted. Nor did they ask to be called father or reverend. Surely the Bible records their humility as examples for us to follow.

Moreover, Jesus explicitly warned us: "Do not call anyone on earth 'father,' for you have one Father, and he is in heaven." (Matthew 23:9)

Church Doctrine Departures

Head of Church and Authority

Along with this centralization of power, with its hierarchy of archbishops, cardinals, and popes, came fundamental changes in church doctrine. Christ was no longer head of the apostate church. The Pope assumed that position. In the First Vatican Council in 1870, Pope Pius IX declared the doctrine of Papal Infallibility. That means when the Pope speaks ex-cathedra (from the chair) on matters of faith and morals, he speaks the law of the Lord.

Nor is the Bible the final word of authority. Church tradition approved by the Council usurps that authority.

Baptism

From the very beginning of the church on the day of Pentecost, baptism was for repentant sinners who came to believe in Christ. (Acts 2:38) That practice continued through the first century. However, by the second century, baptism of infants had begun. Many at that time believed babies were born sinful. To prevent them from dying in sin, babies were baptized on the second day of their lives.

Still, no scriptural basis can be cited for the claim that babies are born in sin. And all the baptisms enumerated in the New Testament were of repentant believers.

Baptism is immersion; that's the meaning of the word. And that was the practice in the early church. So it remained until exceptions began for the ill. "Clinic baptism" was the name given for sprinkling one physically unable to be immersed. Sprinkling for baptism was not fully approved until the Council of Ravena in 1311 A.D. It has never had the approval of Christ.

Absolution from sins by earthly priesthood

Adoration and prayers to the Virgin Mary

Celibacy - Popes and priests are forbidden marriage. Paul predicted it: "The Spirit explicitly warns us that in the time to come some will forsake the faith and surrender their minds to subversive spirits and demon-inspired doctrines . . . . They will forbid marriage. . . ." (I Timothy 4:1-3)

Confessing sins to a priest for forgiveness

Doctrine of indulgences - whereby prayers, gifts, or self-sacrifice mediate sins

Doctrine of purgatory - whereby souls of those who have died in a state of sin are made fit for paradise by temporary banishment, suffering, or punishment.

Doctrine of transubstantiation - whereby the prayer of the pope or priest changes bread and wine into the flesh and blood of Jesus.

Extreme unction - sacramental rite of anointing those in danger of death

Holy water- water blessed and sanctified by the priest

Images and prayers to saints and martyrs

Penance - inflicting punishment in payment for sin as evidence of penitence

Church Worship Departures

Human Creeds

The first General Council was called by Roman Emperor Constantine in 325 A.D. This council was said to represent the universal church. This council adapted a formal statement of faith which came to be called "The Nicene Creed." What's wrong with human creeds?

Mack Lyon, Gospel preacher of the television program In Search of the Lord's Way, addressed that question: "Any human creed, if it contains more than the Bible, contains too much. If it contains less than the Bible, contains too little, and if it contains the same as the Bible, it is superfluous, useless and it is dispensable."

Of course, reciting the Nicene Creed is not authorized by the scriptures and was not practiced by the first century church. Creeds, along with country and city bishops, metropolitans, patriarchs, popes, priests, councils, and church traditions, are departures from the church that Jesus founded and the apostles preached.

Instrumental Music

Singing without musical accompaniment was an intrinsic part of church service for the first five centuries. The Orthodox church never accepted instrumental music in their worship. Scriptures never mentioned nor authorized the use of musical instruments in the early church.

Never-the-less, the apostate church did introduce musical instruments into public worship in the sixth century A.D. By the eighth century, the practice was widely accepted in the church. It was another departure of the faith Paul warned us of in 1 Timothy 4:1.

Why Do It the Lord's Way?

Warnings

Okay, the apostate church departed from the first century church in: organization, doctrine, and worship practices. Church historians all agree that is the case. So what? Times change, circumstances change, why shouldn't the church adapt with the times too?

The answer is: God doesn't allow us that option. He orders us to do it his way -- no more, no less. Check the scriptures out for yourself in your own Bible.

* "Do not add to what I command you and do not subtract from it, but keep the commands of the LORD your God that I give you." (Deuteronomy 4:2)

* "So be careful to do what the LORD your God has commanded you; do not turn aside to the right or to the left." (Deuteronomy 5:32)

* "Observe the commands of the LORD your God, walking in his ways and revering him." (Deuteronomy 5:32)

* "See that you do all I command you; do not add to it or take away from it." (Deuteronomy 12:32)

* "Why do you call me, 'Lord, Lord,' and do not do what I say?" (Luke 6:46)

Examples

The scriptures also provides us with examples of those who failed to worship as commanded. Sure, it sounds innocent enough, but substituting one fire for another was fatal for Aaron's two sons. Leviticus tells their story:

"Aaron's sons Nadab and Abihu took their censers, put fire in them and added incense; and they offered unauthorized fire before the LORD, contrary to his command. So fire came out from the presence of the LORD and consumed them, and they died before the LORD." (Leviticus 10:1-2)

Then there is the story of King Saul. His army was deserting him in the face of their enemies. Furthermore, Samuel, the prophet, did not show up at the appointed time to make the sacrifice. Under duress, Saul did what he thought was right. He took it upon himself to make the burnt offering to the Lord. As Samuel pointed out, the king was not authorized to make this sacrifice. For that he lost his kingdom.

"What have you done?" asked Samuel.

Saul replied, "When I saw that the men were scattering, and that you did not come at the set time, and that the Philistines were assembling at Micmash, I thought, 'Now the Philistines will come down against me at Gilgal, and I have not sought the LORD's favor.' So I felt compelled to offer the burnt offering."

"You acted foolishly," Samuel said. "You have not kept the command the LORD your God gave you; if you had, he would have established your kingdom over Israel for all time. But now your kingdom will not endure; the LORD has sought out a man after his own heart and appointed him leader of his people, because you have not kept the LORD's command." (1 Samuel 13:11-14)

Is there any doubt at all? We are to follow exactly what the scriptures say in organization, in doctrine, and in worship practices. The risk of doing it "our way" could have eternal consequences.

Questions to Consider:

1. What is the purpose of the church? to please God or man?

2. Should the church's organization, doctrine, and worship practices conform to God's will as expressed in the scriptures? or should it conform to church tradition or current popular opinion?

Believe in Jesus Christ, "for without faith it is impossible to please God." (Hebrews 11:6); Also see: (Acts 16:31) (Romans 1:15-17) (1 John 5:1-6)

Repent of your sins, "for [God] commands all people everywhere to repent." (Acts 17:30); Also see: (Luke: 15:10) (2 Peter 3:9)

Confess Jesus as Lord, for he said, "Whoever confesses me before men, him I will also confess before my Father who is in heaven." (Matthew 10:32 NKJV) Also see: (Romans 10:9)

Be baptized for the forgiveness of sins, for Peter said: "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins." (Acts 2:38) Also see: (Mark 16:16) (Romans 6:3-4)

Church organization:

Elders

Elders (also called presbyters, bishops, overseers, pastors, or shepherds, without distinction of office or rank) were men (always men) chosen from the members to oversee and set an example for the congregation. Also they are to encourage the congregation with sound doctrine and refute those who oppose it. (1 Peter 5:1-4) (1 Titus 1:9) For the requirements for this position see: 1 Timothy 3:1-7 and Titus 1:5-9.

Deacons

Deacons were men chosen to serve the congregation (overlook the daily distribution of food or wait on tables.) (Acts 6:1-7) For requirements for both the deacon and his wife, see: 1 Timothy 3:8-13. Paul also mentions deacons in his address to the church at Philippi. (Philippians 1:1) At least two men, Stephen and Philip, chosen as deacons in the Jerusalem church also preached or evangelized.

Evangelists

Evangelists (preachers, ministers) are preachers of the Gospel. (Ephesians 4:11) (1 Timothy 4:13-16) (2 Timothy 4:1-5)

Those three positions were the only ones created for Christ's church. Notice that no singular person was placed in charge of any congregation. And there was no higher organization than the local congregation. Synods, Councils, Conventions, Popes, Ecclesiastical Legislative Bodies, Associations or Conferences with delegates from different congregations are nowhere to be found in the Bible. They didn't exist in the church you read about in the New Testament.

Church worship:

Over the past two thousand years, Christians have worshipped God in various ceremonies and rituals including: baptism, the Lord's Supper, fasting, foot washing, prayers, reading scriptures, reciting creeds, singing, miraculous powers, prophecies, healings, and speaking in tongues. You may wonder what lies behind these traditions. Are they merely customs of the church? Or is there something more to it?

Let's start with a definition of church. Our English word "church" is based on the Greek word "ekklesia" which means an assembly. Sometimes "church" refers to a local congregation; at other times the word is used in a universal sense including all believers in Christ. Christ is the chief cornerstone (Ephesians 2:20), foundation (1 Corinthians 3:11), and head of the church. (Ephesians 1:22-23) (Ephesians 5:23)

But Jesus himself had very little to say about the church. In Mark, Luke and John, Jesus never utters the word "church." Matthew, and Matthew alone, gives us our only two quotes. In one passage, Jesus says the church should resolve disputes between its members. (Matthew 18:15-17) In the other reference, Jesus says: "I will build my church and the gates of hell will not prevail against it." (Matthew 16:18)

Outside of Revelation, these are the only two instances where Jesus directly refers to his church. Even so, he did introduce the two sacraments of the church -- baptism and the Lord's Supper.

Baptism

We have mentioned it before, but it bears repeating. The resurrected Jesus ordered his apostles to make disciples in every nation "baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit." (Matthew 28:19)

Jesus says baptism is essential for salvation. (Mark 16:16) And Peter says it is required for the forgiveness of sins. (Acts 2:38)

The book of Acts records much of what we know about the history of the early church. Here we find a series of sermons, teachings, and baptisms. Who was baptized? Simon the sorcerer (Acts 8:13), the Ethiopian eunuch (Acts 8:38), Saul, who was later called Paul (Acts 9:18), Lydia, a dealer in purple cloth (Acts 16:14-15), the Philippian jailer (Acts 16:33), Crispus, the synagogue ruler (Acts 18:8) (1 Corinthians 1:14), twelve disciples at Ephesus (Acts 19:1-5), and men and women at city in Samaria. (Acts 8:5-12)

What did all of these people have in common? They were all believing adults. Were children also baptized? Some claim there were, and they cite these passages to support their position. Acts 16:15 states that "[Lydia] and members of her household were baptized." Acts 16:33 reads: "[The jailer] and all of his family were baptized." And Acts 18:8 says that Crispus and "his entire household" were baptized.

The question is: Does "members of her household," "all of his family," and "his entire household" imply that children and infants were also baptized? Probably not. Notice that the jailer "and his whole family" had come to believe in God. (Acts 16:34) Similarly, Crispus "and his entire household believed in the Lord." (Acts 18:8)

In both instances, all believed, and all were baptized. Clearly we are not speaking of infants or very small children in this context. Those who were baptized were mature enough to believe in Christ.

How were these believing "adults" baptized? Romans 6:3-4 speaks of baptism as a symbolic burial with Christ. And in Acts 8:38 Philip took the Ethiopian eunuch "down into the water" to baptize him. Baptism was and is emersion. Throughout the first century baptism and emersion were synonymous.

Lord's Supper; The Eucharist; The Holy Communion

In Matthew we read: "While they were eating, Jesus took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to his disciples saying, 'Take and eat; this is my body.'

"Then he took the cup, gave thanks and offered it to them saying, 'Drink from it, all of you. This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.'" (Matthew 26:26-28)

In the Gospel according to John, the significance of this act becomes clear. Jesus: "I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world." (John 6:51)

He repeated and emphasized his words: "Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day." (John 6:53-54)

Paul, in his first letter to the Corinthians, explained where this custom originated. He says: "The tradition which I handed on to you came from the Lord himself: that on the night of his arrest the Lord Jesus took bread and after giving thanks to God broke it and said: 'This is my body, which is for you; do this in memory of me.'

In the same way he took the cup after supper, and said: 'This cup is the new covenant sealed by my blood. Whenever you drink it, do this in memory of me.' For every time you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the death of the Lord, until he comes.'" (1 Corinthians 11:23-26 REB)

Paul informs us that the early church carried on this tradition and tells us when they did it. "On the first day of the week we came together to break bread. Paul spoke to the people and, because he intended to leave the next day, kept on talking until midnight." (Acts 20:7)

The apostle again speaks of the Lord's Supper when he warned the Corinthians: "A man ought to examine himself before he eats of the bread and drinks of the cup. For anyone who eats and drinks without recognizing the body of the Lord eats and drinks judgment on himself." (1 Corinthians 11:28-29)

Such respected historians as Eusebius of Caesarea and Johann August Wilhelm Neander tell us that Christians in the early centuries of the church took the Lord's Supper every Sunday.

Fasting

Jesus to John the Baptist's disciples: "How can the guests of the bridegroom mourn while he is with them? The time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them; then they will fast." (Matthew 9:15)

And Jesus issued instructions on fasting. Don't put on a show when you fast like hypocrites do. Let your fasting be a secret between you and God. He knows, and he will reward you. (Matthew 6:16-18)

Luke speaks of the Antioch church worshiping the Lord and fasting. "While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, 'Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.'" (Acts 13:2) In the next chapter we read, "Paul and Barnabas appointed elders in each church [in Lystra, Iconium and Antioch] and, with prayer and fasting, committed them to the Lord." (Acts 14:23)

We find no command in the New Testament to fast. However, in Acts chapters 13 and 14 we discover instances in which the early church did fast.

Foot Washing

"[Jesus] got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples' feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him." (John 13:4-5)

"When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. 'Do you understand what I have done for you?' he asked them. 'You call me "Teacher" and "Lord," and rightly so, for that is what I am. Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another's feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you." (John 13:12-15)

"Washing the feet of the saints" is also one of good deed qualifications Paul lists for widows seeking support from the church. (1 Timothy 5:9-10)

Even so, washing feet is nowhere declared a part of the church's worship service.

Prayer

Prayer is our way of communicating with God. Jesus offers us an example. "Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one." (Matthew 6:9-13)

Notice that the Lord's prayer is simple, short, and to the point. It asks for daily help, guidance, and forgiveness.

He tells us to pray for those who persecute us; (Matthew 5:44) pray to God privately, don't make a spectacle out of it; and don't babble on. God already knows what you need. He's not impressed by the length of your prayer. (Matthew 6:5-8)

So what are we to pray? Paul tells us to give thanks in all circumstances; (1 Thessalonians 5:18) for God's help; (1 Timothy 5:5) for each other; (James 5:16) for whatever we want to request; (Philippians 4:6) for rulers, officials, and everyone. (1 Timothy 2:1-2)

James says we don't get what we want because we don't pray for it. Or if we do pray for it, our request is denied because of our wrong motives. (James 4:2-3) Pray whenever you are sick or in trouble, advises James. (James 5:14)

Prayer was a part of the New Testament church's worship. (Acts 2:42) (1 Timothy 2:1-2)

Giving

Paul tells us of the collection taken for God's people in the Galatian and Corinthian churches. "On the first day of every week, each one of you should set aside a sum of money in keeping with his income, saving it up, so that when I come no collections will have to be made." (1 Corinthians 16:2)

Reading Scriptures

By the early part of the first century, Jews had established the tradition of reading the Law and Prophets in their synagogue services. Paul told Timothy to devote himself to the "public reading of scriptures, preaching and teaching." (1 Timothy 4:13) Thus the Jewish custom was carried over into church worship.

In Colossians we find Paul instructing the Colossians and the Laodiceans to exchange letters he had written and read both. (Colossians 4:16) And in Thessalonians, he tells the church to read his letter to all the brothers. (1 Thessalonians 5:27) Thereby, what was to become portions of the New Testament was already being read in the church along with the Law and Prophets of the Old Testament.

Reciting Creeds

A creed is a compact statement of faith recited by the congregation during the worship service. Creeds, however, are nowhere to be found in the New Testament. No common human creed, no catechism, no confession of faith are authorized in the scriptures. They were all added later.

It's true, the Lord's Prayer is frequently quoted word for word. Did Jesus intend for that prayer to become a creed? Evidently, he did not. Jesus introduced his prayer saying, "Pray, then, in this way." (Matthew 6:9 NRSV) That sounds very much like general guidance - "Do it in this fashion" rather than, "I want you to repeat every word of this verbatim."

Singing

Here are all the New Testament references to hymns, songs, and spiritual songs.

After Jesus and the apostles' Passover meal, "they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives." (Matthew 26:30 NKJV)

"About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them." (Acts 16:25)

Paul: "Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord." (Ephesians 5:19)

Paul: "I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with my mind." (1 Corinthians 14:15)

Paul: "What then shall we say, brothers? When you come together, everyone has a hymn, or a word of instruction, a revelation, a tongue or an interpretation." (1 Corinthians 14:26)

Paul encourages us to: "admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God." (Colossians 3:16)

James: "Is any one of you in trouble? He should pray. Is anyone happy? Let him sing songs of praise." (James 5:13)

Notice musical instruments, choirs, and solos were not mentioned in church worship. Like human creeds, they were later additions not authorized by the scriptures. Historically, the first appearance of instrumental music in church worship was not until the sixth century A.D., and it was not widely accepted until the eighth century. A number of religious leaders including: John Calvin, John Wesley, and Charles Spurgeon strongly opposed the use of instrumental music in worship because of its absence in the New Testament.

Miraculous Powers, Prophecies, Healings, Speaking in Tongues

Jesus preformed miracles; the apostles preformed miracles; members of the early church performed miracles.

In 1 Corinthians, Paul lists nine spiritual gifts of the infant church: "To one there is given through the Spirit the message of wisdom, to another the message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues." (1 Corinthians 12:8-10)

What was the purpose of these miracles? Jesus confirmed his deity with his miracles. "When John heard in prison what Christ was doing, he sent his disciples to ask him, 'Are you the one who was to come, or should we expect someone else?'

"Jesus replied, 'Go back and report to John what you hear and see: The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cured, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is preached to the poor.'" (Matthew 11:2-5)

Likewise, Jesus gave his apostles the power to perform miracles to confirm their message. "In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all; they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well."

"After the Lord Jesus had spoken to them, he was taken up into heaven and he sat at the right hand of God. Then the disciples went out and preached everywhere, and the Lord worked with them and confirmed his word by the signs that accompanied it." (Mark 16:17-20)

Those gifts to the early church Paul lists: wisdom, knowledge, faith, healing miracles, prophecy, discerning spirits, different tongues and interpretation of tongues were all necessary for the revelation and the confirmation of the unwritten gospel message. When the gospel was completely revealed and confirmed, the purpose for miracles, tongues, healings, and prophecies ceased.

In 1 Corinthians, Paul provides us with this explanation: "As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part, but when the perfect comes, the partial will pass away." (1 Corinthians 13:8-10)

In the original Greek, "perfect" in this verse means "completeness" or "fulfillment." So, those miraculous gifts ended in the early church when the revelation of God's word was complete or fulfilled. That is why you don't see authentic miraculous events in churches today.

Permit me to conclude this church worship section by mentioning three practices found in some modern churches which are nowhere to be found in the early church: alter calls, pleas to "just accept Jesus into your heart," and repeating "the sinner's prayer." Those are all man-made traditions, not supported by scriptures.

Questions to Consider:

1. Since Jesus established his church, and the New Testament describes his church, do you think it might be a good idea to follow the biblical example: in church name? in what we call our church members? in the requirements to enter the church? in church organization? in doctrine? in church worship? in baptism? in the Lord's Supper? in prayer? in reading scriptures? in preaching? in singing?

2. Why would Luke, Paul, Peter, James, and John provide us with such extensive details of the original church, if they did not intend for us to follow this pattern?

Church loans often suffer from several problems, and as a result specialized business finance strategies are required. Typical church financing will involve multiple difficulties.

Church loans are probably the most difficult form of commercial financing to successfully close. Churches are an integral part of local communities, so it is necessary to improve church financing solutions. In almost all cases financing will require a very specialized commercial real estate loan that is typically not widely available.

Churches are not typical commercial enterprises but they do have substantial business financing requirements. This article will offer an overview of four key church loan financing difficulties and a listing of six practical church financing strategies.

Four Major Church Financing and Business Finance Difficulties -

Before addressing possible solutions for the most common church loan needs, it is important to discuss the typical barriers to obtaining appropriate financing. Historically church financing has been difficult to arrange for several reasons:

(1) Church Loan Obstacle Number One: Church properties are unique. Lenders are therefore concerned that if commercial loan payments are not made in a timely manner and the lender is required to assume ownership of the property, it will be very difficult to find a new owner because of the unique property features.

(2) Church Financing Difficulty Number Two: Commercial lenders usually require individual guarantors for church financing, and this is inappropriate for a church loan. The financial structure of churches simply does not lend itself to a traditional lender/guarantor approach. Many commercial lenders are not comfortable with the potential lack of individual guarantors because of the difficulty of reselling the church property if negative financial circumstances occur in the future.

It is unfortunately very common for church financing to have been secured only after church members have authorized an individual guarantee for church financing. The need for individual guarantors acts as a serious barrier first because church members might be unwilling to do so and second because there might not be individuals who have enough financial resources to provide an individual guarantee for larger church financing needs.

(3) Church Financing Difficulty Number Three: When church financing is obtained, there are frequently unacceptable business finance terms such as very small loans, low loan-to-value (LTV) of 50% to 60%, short-term loans and high interest rates. These onerous terms are tantamount to the church loan being declined, and if the terms are accepted, the church is likely to experience continuing financial difficulties due to unrealistic commercial mortgage requirements.

(4) Church Financing Difficulty Number Four: Construction, renovation and land acquisition are even more difficult for churches to finance than purchases or refinancing. As a result, needed repairs are often postponed indefinitely and new churches frequently take many years to become a reality.

Six Practical Church Loan and Commercial Mortgage Solutions -

There are common-sense financing solutions for the church loan issues described above. Here is an overview of church financing that is now available from some non-traditional lenders:

(1) Church Loan Financing Approach Number One: Non-Recourse Loans (instead of guarantors). As noted above, the willingness to forego traditional guarantors does require a non-traditional lender. With this church financing approach, church lending will not depend on individual guarantors.

(2) Church Loan Solution Number Two: Long-term business loans. Church financing will be much more successful when it is long-term instead of short-term (payments will be reduced dramatically).

(3) Church Loan Solution Number Three: Low interest rates (usually a maximum of prime plus 1-2%). In reality many churches have been taken advantage of and charged excessive interest rates because lenders perceived that they did not have any other realistic options.

With payments limited to prime plus 1-2% or less, church financing payments will be noticeably reduced. In combination with longer-term loans, the overall payment reduction will make a significant contribution to church cash flow improvements.

(4) Church Loan Solution Number Four: Church loan financing minimum of $500,000. This allows churches to complete most financing in one step rather than piecemeal over a period of years.

(5) Church Loan Solution Number Five: Higher LTV (75%-90% is possible). This results in a more workable amount of 10% to 25% (rather than 40% to 50% with traditional church financing) for the down payment or non-financed portion in refinancing.

(6) Church Loan Solution Number Six: Church financing can now include new construction, renovation, land acquisition, purchase and refinancing. Due to flexible church loan financing, it is not necessary for any of these important church loan activities to be postponed.

Collectively the six church financing solutions described above should benefit a large number of churches by allowing refinancing with much better financial terms and by facilitating the construction of new churches on an accelerated timetable. The six church loan financing approaches should result in financial covenants that will contribute to the long-term financial profile of prudent churches which adhere to the church financing approaches suggested.

Regardless of the practical business finance and commercial mortgage strategies that have been described above, it is appropriate to emphasize that arranging appropriate church financing will almost always be difficult. Due to the specialized nature of a church loan, unavoidable complications with the commercial real estate financing should be anticipated. As a result, prudent church borrowers should attempt to acquire a better understanding of these complex business loan issues.

     Growth is amazing and seems to happen right before your eyes.  After all, that is what life is all about - growing and changing.  I moved to Summerville, South Carolina about 7 years ago from Columbia, South Carolina.  Engaged to the most beautiful woman I ever met, my best friend in the whole world, I had my mind made up that she would be moving to Columbia for us to start our family and work in the ministry.

     After praying and seeking the Lord's direction, I moved to Summerville instead to help out at Refuge Bibleway Church.  This is the church of my wife and her grandfather, Bishop Herbert C. Heyward is the pastor.  The church is a nice size - not so big where you don't know anyone and not to small where everyone is in your business!  Moving from Columbia and coming from Refuge Temple Church where there are over 1,000 members, it was a new experience for me.  My prayer was to be able to work closely with the youth department and during our first church business meeting that prayer was answered when our pastor asked me to be the youth president.  So I accepted with great joy and gladness.

     Refuge Bibleway Church has a lovely youth department that is growing continually.  We have services specifically for our youth every 1st Sunday afternoon at five o'clock and on 2nd Sundays our young people participate in morning services by singing in the youth choir and ushering.  Our bible trivia that the youth department hosts every month gives away cash prizes to the winners that took their time to study the topic for the month and won in the trivia competition!  Just recently we went to the Presbyterian Home to sing Christmas carols to the elderly and it was a joyous occasion.

     Our Missionary Department is definitely lead by powerful women of God who are focused on teaching the ways of the Lord and living by example for other young women to pattern themselves after.  Every 2nd and 4th Wednesday night, the Missionary Department has services and we always are traveling with them wherever the Lord takes them so we can be a blessing in others lives.  Whether at district meetings or state conventions, whether at international convocations or the Women's Council Convention. to the streets of Charleston and Summerville to the whole United States of America, whereever the Lord takes them, we support them and continously pray for their strength in the Lord.

     The Deacon's are a fine group of men that constantly take care of the business of the church.  They feed the hungry, deliver communion to those that are sick, and constantly support the pastor in the vision the Lord have given him to build a new educational center in memory of the late Mother Inez Heyward.  These deacons are strong men of God, faithful, and true.  They are always there when you need them and encourage you every step of the way.

      Gosh, I could name all the other departments and names, but I would probably be typing forever.  But our church, www.refugebiblewaychurch.com is definitely the place where you should visit.  We have so many areas for you to participate in and are just about to finish the new educational center and dedicate it to the work of the Lord!  We built it, a $1 million dollar  building without mortgage and we owe no many nothing but love.

Background to Aurangzeb’s Life:-

Aurangzeb was the third son of the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan; his mother was Mumtaz Mahal, who is buried in the Taj Mahal. Aurangzeb showed his ability in administrative and military matters in various appointments, which gradually caused him to envy his eldest brother Dara Shikoh, the designated successor to the throne.

In 1657 Shah Jahan became seriously ill, and the rivalry between Dara Shikoh and Aurangzeb turned into open confrontation. Shah Jahan recovered unexpectedly, but the struggle for succession continued. Aurangzeb placed his father under house arrest, drove one brother into death, had two other brothers executed and in 1658 declared himself emperor of the Mughal empire, assuming the name 'Alangir ("the World Seizer").

Aurangzeb did not share the interest of his ancestors and relatives in the arts, drink and the good life generally but was serious-minded and religious. He inherited an empire that had flourished for nearly a century under the wise administrative and economic procedures introduced by his great-grandfather Akbar the Great. The economic boom had led to the development of artisanal activity in all villages, and the municipalities had become economically much less dependent on the central power.

Aurangzeb tried to stem the growing independence of the different parts of his empire by returning to autocratic rule. He abandoned the policy of separation of religion and state and turned away from the policy of religious tolerance that during the previous three generations had kept Muslims, Hindus, Sikhs, Christians and others together in peace and common destiny. In 1675 he executed the Sikh guru Tegh Bahadur because of his refusal to convert to Islam. The Sikh rebellion that followed continued throughout Aurangzeb's reign; relations between Sikhs and Muslims have been strained ever since.

In 1679 Aurangzeb reintroduced the jizya, a poll tax for non-Muslims that had been abolished by Akbar the Great a century earlier. The result was a revolt of the Hindu Rajputs, supported by Aurangzeb's third son Akbar, in 1680 - 1681. In the south of the empire the Maratha kingdom was conquered and broken up and its ruler Sambhaji executed in 1689, which started a long and exhausting guerilla campaign by the Maratha Hindu population.

The ongoing struggles placed severe strain on the empire's finances, and increased taxation led to several peasant revolts, often but not always under the guise of religious movements.

At Aurangzeb's death the empire was larger than before but severely weakened. It survived for another 150 years but was in constant religious strife. What Akbar the Great had so splendidly begun collapsed 300 years later under the colonial onslaught, because the empire's economic progress did not lead to the political reform that would have allowed further development.

Jizyah according to Satish Chandra:-

Aurangzeb introduced the jaziya, but, cautions Satish Chandra, "it was not meant to be an economic pressure for forcing Hindus to convert to Islam, for its incidence was to be light." For this assertion Satish Chandra gives two bits of proof, so to say. First, "women, children, the disabled, the indigent, that is, those whose income was less than the means of subsistence, were exempted as were those in government service." How could even Aurangzeb have exacted a tax from those "whose income was less than the means of subsistence?” And why would he exact a discriminatory and humiliating tax from those who were in government service, that is, from those who were already serving his interests and those of the Islamic State? The second proof that Satish Chandra gives is that "in fact, only an insignificant section of Hindus changed their religion due to this tax" -- but could that not have been because of the firm attachment of Hindus to their faith, because of their tenacity rather than because of the liberality of Aurangzeb?

The jaziya was not meant either to meet "a difficult financial situation". Its reimposition was in fact, says Satish Chandra, "both political and ideological in nature." Political in the sense that "it was meant to rally the Muslims for the defence of the State against the Marathas and the Rajputs who were up in arms, and possibly against the Muslim States of Deccan, especially Golconda, which was in alliance with the infidels." A parity twice-over -- one, that Aurangzeb was only trying to rally the Muslims just as those opposing him had rallied the Marathas and Rajputs. And, in any case, the ones who were opposing him were "infidels"

"Jaziya was to be collected by honest; God-fearing Muslims who were specially appointed for the purpose and its proceeds were reserved for the Ulema." As the proceeds went to Ulama, there was a secular reason for exacting the tax -- it was to be "a type of bribe for the theologians among whom there was a lot of unemployment,"

Aurangzeb’s Administration: -

Aurangzeb ruled for almost 50 years. During his long reign, the Mughal Empire reached territorial climax. Aurangzeb proved to be a hardworking ruler and never spared himself or his subordinates in the task of government. He was a stirct disciplinarism who did not spare his own sons, during his reign he introduced few administrative changes. According to histories, Aurangzeb brought changes in administration. Those were that the senior Hindu officers in the finance ministry were retained and even promoted, although in Banaras and some other places and Brahmans were harassed, and Hindu temples were also demolished by orthodox mobs. Aurangzeb stopped this desecration, but, in accordance with Islamic Sharia rules no new temples would be elected. A high proved mansabdar was appointed as censor of morals (muhtasib) to prevent drinking and to make Muslim changes to Quranic Laws.

There were many changes regarding festival’s celebration also. Like celebration of Iranian Naw festival, which falls on the day the sun enters Aries was banned The “Kalima”, or the confession of faith, was no longer stamped on coins, to prevent the holy words from being defiled by unbelievers or heretics. These reforms in no way undermined Hindu political and economic interests. Aurangzeb also used to send gift to holy men of Mecca-Madina & those were suppose to be distributed among poor or needy but to Aurangzeb’s disappointment the funds were misused. In other words some historiams used different way of describing Aurangzeb’s reign. They divided his reign into two phases. First phase was from 1658-1679 and second was from 1679 to his death 1707. And these were divided again into severed sub-phases. Other Historians defines economy measures, tax, Hindu temples etc in the reign of Aurangzeb. There were many ceremonies, which were used to perform, were also stopped like the practices of the Emperor putting a Tika or saffrom paste on the forehead of a new raja was stopped. Practices, which were considered against Islamic spirit, were banned. Public displays of Holi and Muharram procession were also stopped. The courtiers were also asked not to wear silk gowns or gowns of mixed silk and cottons.

Taxs:-

There were taxs. Basically there were many taxs and we are told that Khalisa areas alone, rahdari had yielded 25 lakhs of rupees a year. Another tax was pandari or ground rent for stalls in the bazar in the capital and others towns. Another vexation tax, which was abolished in 1666, was the octroi duty on Tobacco.

Economy Measures:-

According to the history of Aurangzeb, in thirteenth years, it was reported that expenses had exceeded income during the preceding twelve years. Some of the measures of economy adopted by Aurangzeb were the retrenchment of many items in the expenditure of the Emperor, the princes and Begums. It seems that Aurangzeb was keen to promote trade among Muslim who depended almost exclusively on the state support. In 1665, he reduced the duty on import of goods by Muslim traders from 5% to 2 ½% and two years later abolished it altogether. But he had to reimpose it when he found Muslim traders were abusing it by presenting goods of Hindu traders as theirs. So ultimately it was kept 2½% for the Muslims. Many temples were being destructed by him also.

So this was Aurangzeb’s way of administrating the Mughal.

Aurangzeb’s Religious Policy: -

According to historians Aurangzeb reversed Akbar’s Policy of religious toleration. He basically used those policies which were already introduced by his predecessor but those were not that strong so again Aurangzeb during his reign again used those policies and one of them in Religious policy.

Aurangzeb’s religious policy was largely based on his analysis of the first half of Aurangzeb’s reign, which in his opinion was climaxed by the reinposition of Jizyah (poll tax). The other orthodox measures of Aurangzeb were insidious attempts on his part to establish an Islamic state in India which in effect implied conversion of the entire population to Islam and the extinction of every form a dissent. The religion policy of Mughal was largely the reflection of the personal religious views etc. It was a very narrow and orthodoxy kind of policy taken by Aurangzeb. He put ban on the practice, which were considered as against Islamic spirit. And many ceremonies and festivals were banned that time. Many temples were also destroyed that time. It was earlier found that long standing temple should not be demolished but no new temples allowed to be built. But later on it was found that many temples were demolished. And this was so because Aurangzeb started fearing for his political existence because there were some temple where both Hindu & Muslim used to go and learn teachings and Aurangzeb thinking that these kind of practice may hamper therefore, there should be stopped so demolishment took place. There was also tax, which was imposed on non-Muslims like Jizyah.

Jizyah: -

It was that tax which was reimposed by Aurangzeb on the non-muslims. Aurangzeb considered reimpostion of Jizyah, but postponed the matter due to “certain political exigencies”. That it was reimpossed twenty-two years after Aurangzeb’s accession to the throne is clear indication that its institution was on account of political considerations. Jizyah was used to be collected by honest God-fearing Muslims, who were especially appointed for this purpose. Because of this tax many got converted and enjoyed benefits but many did not left their religion and were being harassed. There were exception in this tax was that the women, children and the person who can not earn even for his own livelihood will be taken into consideration. So basically Jizyah was not an Income Tax but was a kind of property tax, which is imposed only in non-Muslim. These many let Islam grow.

Policy’s Impact: -

There been several bad impacts of Aurangzeb’s policies. Some historians had said that Aurangzeb’s policies made Mughal very weak. Earlier there was no respect left for Islam and its adherents; mosques were without splendor, while idol-temples flourished; the requisites of canonical practice remained closed under bolts, while the gates of irreligious practices were flung open. That time Aurangzeb was the defender of the truth faith, converts to Islam were made much of. Many temples were given order of destruction and instead mosques built. But now because of this religious policy Mughal State had failed to yield the expected dividends. Now Aurangzeb faced difficult task of bringing under Imperial control the extensive country extending up to Jinji , populated by Hindu population and simultaneoudy he had to deal with Marathas. And situation became so worst that there seem like Aurangzeb need to make some modification in his policy. His attitude towards Hindu temples also varied from time to time according to circumstance that is political exigencies. And his attitude towards Marathas also varied. But policy was not changed. During that time many festivals & ceremonies banned and all practice, which is found against Islamic spirit, were also banned. Jizyah’s impact was also very bad. Altogether, Jizyah came into picture because of religious policy. This tax was for non-Muslims. And basic impact of this Jizyah was that people got converted into Islamic religion so as to escape from Jizyah and enjoy profits of being Islamic.

But many people who were not Islamic were treated badly. Many people used to close their shops and observe hartals against the measure. But even though Jizyah had not led to any large conversion. And in this Jizyah there started lot of corruption. Aurangzeb’s religious policy led to series of contractions, which he found hard to resolve.

Conclusion: -

After reading or researching it can said that Aurangzeb was very orthodox regarding his religious policy but indeed was a hardworking personality and he was of such kind that he did not even allow his officers to be spare. But even Aurangzeb got only disappointment. Reason can be that he was very orthodox regarding religious policies and also Jizyah. Religious policy was basically concern with Islamic spirits. And Jizyah was there because of this Religious policy, People who do not belonged to Islamic religion or who were non-Muslim were charged with this Jizyah tax. To conclude Aurangzeb;s religious policy we will have to went through a numbers of phases. Through Aurangzeb’s policy he brought system under tremendous pressure especially by his religious policy and also political policies. Aurangzeb’s religious policy should be seen in a wider context. Aurangzeb was orthodox in his outlook and tried to remain within the framework of Islamic law. But this law was development outside India in a vastly dissimilar situation, and could hardly be applied rigidly to India. His failure to respect the susceptibilities of his non-Muslim subjects can be seen on many occasions. And his re-imposition of Jizyah did not help him to rally the Muslims to his side or generate a greater sense of loyalty towards a state based on Islamic Law. So overall his policies had weakened his administration. And religious policy played very important role in his reign. Aurangzeb died in 1707 and after his death’s Mughal became weaker then before. And it stood nearly for some 100 years and then lost, as there were many problems regarding religion also but alone religion was not the reason but there were many reasons behind.
